Carroll Shelby’s simple plan of fitting a Ford V-8 engine into the chassis of an AC Ace proved to be a brilliant idea, with the Shelby Cobra quickly becoming one of the most iconic sports cars of its era. Initially housing a 260-cubic inch V-8 engine, then a 289-cubic inch powerplant, a new, stronger coil-suspended chassis was introduced in 1965 to fit the big-block 427-cubic inch V-8—which in race trim could produce in excess of 450 horsepower. Wider bodywork, extended wheel-arch flares, and a bigger radiator intake combined to create the legendarily aggressive 427 Cobra.
In the early 1990s, Carroll Shelby took up where 427 Cobra production left off with the introduction of the CSX4000 Series. Built in Las Vegas, Nevada on new chassis, these cars were intended to be “new” Cobras with the same style and appearance as their 1960s ancestors. Sometimes referred to as continuation cars, the 4000 Series typically featured fiberglass bodywork in stock form as well as a number of other improvements, including a stronger steel frame and better alloys used in the components, plus better cooling and additional heat shielding to make these cars safer and more drivable without losing any of their original character.
The Shelby Cobra we are pleased to offer for sale is chassis CSX4952 and was completed in June 2010. It is finished in Guardsman Blue with White Centre Stripes and a Black leather interior. This example is powered by a Roush 427SR small block with twisted wedge cam making 502hp and 521lbs/ft. It features a hydraulic roller cam, roller rockers, 4340 crank, 4340 H-beam rods, "road race" front sump oil pan and was completely built, balanced and Dyno'd by Roush. The power is sent to the rear wheels via a Tremec TKO 5 Speed gearbox with a .68 overdrive. It has also had insulation added professionally behind the dash and under the tunnel, greatly decreasing the heat transfer to passengers.
It was originally built for a gentleman in California, USA and then went on to spend some time in Honolulu, Hawaii before being imported and registered in the United Kingdom in February, 2019. The authenticity of the vehicle is documented by its Shelby CSX number and a manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO) from Shelby Automobiles signed by Carroll Shelby himself on December 31st 2008. The car sits today in fantastic condition and is showing less than 5,000 miles on the clock since being built in 2010.
Living up to the Shelby name in every aspect, this CSX “4000 Series” 427 S/C Cobra is a subtly modified interpretation of one of the most recognizable cars in the world. Contact us now for more information or to arrange a viewing.
