Description
The Porsche 959 was unveiled at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show as a revolutionary entry into the FIA Group B rally championship. Developed as the Type 961, this high-tech supercar was designed to push the limits of engineering and performance while meeting the homologation requirement of at least 200 road-legal units. The 959’s lightweight body featured an aluminium and Kevlar-reinforced shell with extensive aerodynamic enhancements, including a widened rear section, full-width wing, and advanced cooling ducts. Its chassis was based on the 911 Carrera but incorporated cutting-edge materials and design elements that set it apart as a true technological marvel.
The 959 was powered by a 2.85 litre, twin-turbocharged flat-six engine, derived from Porsche’s race-winning “Moby Dick” IMSA GT and IndyCar programs. Producing 444 horsepower, it featured a sequential turbocharging system that optimised low-end boost and high-end power. The engine was paired with a six-speed BorgWarner transaxle, offering a unique low-gear setting for off-road conditions. Porsche’s advanced all-wheel-drive system, Porsche-Steuer-Kupplung (PSK), allowed real-time torque distribution between the front and rear axles, ensuring superior handling and traction in various driving conditions. The 959 also introduced electronically adjustable suspension and cutting-edge driver instrumentation, solidifying its reputation as a technological pioneer.
With a top speed of 197 mph and a 0-60 mph time of under four seconds, the 959 was the fastest production car of its time. Most units were delivered in “Komfort” trim, featuring full leather interiors and air conditioning, while a few “Sport” versions were produced for maximum performance. Despite its success, Group B rallying was cancelled in 1986, and Porsche continued production of the 959 as a road car, though at a financial loss. By the end of production in 1988, just 292 examples had been built, cementing its status as one of the most exclusive and iconic supercars ever created.
Originally built as a C00 car for the German market, this 959 Komfort is one of just 179 examples produced in 1988. It was delivered new via the Stuttgart factory and finished in Silver Metallic over a Dark Grey leather interior. Factory options included Seat Heating System, Sports Seats, and the Porsche Alarm System.
The first owner registered the car in Esslingen near Stuttgart, where it received its initial service at Porsche. Shortly thereafter, it was presented for a special emissions test before changing hands to a doctor from Berlin. Over the following two decades, the 959 was regularly maintained at Porsche dealerships in Berlin, with documented service history throughout its ownership there.
After this, the car was relocated to Switzerland, where it continued to receive care from official Porsche Centres. It returned to Germany in 2023, at which point a Classic Data report confirmed its outstanding condition and verified mileage. The car has recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul & full service with renowned UK based specialists Paragon with over £85,000 spent in June 2026.
It remains registered in Germany, with all EU taxes fully paid, and is offered complete with two keys, German title, Classic Data report, the original service book, owner’s manual, leather wallet and matching leather cases containing the tool kit roll (including white gloves), hazard triangle, jack, wheel wrench, and centre lock socket.
A true classic supercar and one of the most coveted Porsche models of all time, this well-documented 959 Komfort stands as an icon of its era.
