Description

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, often referred to as the “Pagoda” due to the distinctive concave shape of its hardtop roof, was introduced in 1967 as the final and most powerful evolution of the W113 SL series. Building on the earlier 230 SL and 250 SL, the 280 SL featured a 2.8-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing 170 bhp, delivering smoother performance and improved torque. Designed by Paul Bracq, the car combined elegant, understated styling with advanced safety features for its era, including a rigid passenger cell and front and rear crumple zones. It was offered as a roadster with the option of a removable hardtop, allowing it to be enjoyed as both a refined tourer and an open sports car.

Throughout its production run until 1971, the 280 SL earned a reputation for exceptional build quality, reliability and everyday usability, qualities that set it apart from many contemporaries. Favoured by discerning drivers rather than outright racers, it became popular in Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States alike, often specified with automatic transmission and luxury options. Today, the 280 SL is regarded as one of Mercedes-Benz’s most successful classic models, valued for its timeless design, robust engineering and the balance it strikes between comfort and sporting character.

This left-hand drive, automatic example was originally supplied new to the United States in 1971 and was imported to the UK from California in 2021. Since acquisition by its current owner, the car has benefited from a comprehensive cosmetic restoration, including a full respray in Dark Metallic Grey, with the removable hardtop finished to match, and a complete interior retrim carried out by D:Class in Dark Red Oldtimer leather with basket-weave seat centres.

The distinctive “rabbit ear” headrests, door cards, dashboard, A-pillars, deck lid cover, under-dash area and kick panels have all been retrimmed in matching leather. Red twin-loop carpeting with leather binding has been fitted throughout, complemented by the installation of a new black canvas hood. In addition, a new Becker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and upgraded speakers has been installed, sympathetically enhancing modern usability while retaining a period-correct appearance.

Fresh from a comprehensive cosmetic restoration, this handsome final-year example, equipped with the dependable inline six-cylinder engine and a smooth automatic transmission, would make an excellent addition to any Mercedes-Benz enthusiast’s collection, as well as an ideal companion for relaxed weekend motoring and classic car events.
