Description

The Lancia Delta, introduced in 1979 and penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, began as a refined yet practical hatchback from the storied Italian marque. Its transformation in the mid-1980s, however, marked one of the most remarkable evolutions in modern automotive history. In response to sweeping regulatory changes following the demise of Group B, Lancia reimagined the Delta as a competition-bred machine, culminating in the HF 4WD and the celebrated HF Integrale. These homologation specials, defined by turbocharged power, permanent all-wheel drive, and purposeful, muscular styling offered an experience closely aligned with their rally counterparts, elevating the Delta into the upper echelon of performance road cars.

On the world stage, the Delta Integrale established a legacy that remains unparalleled in Group A rallying. Between 1987 and 1992, it secured six consecutive World Rally Championship manufacturers’ titles, a feat unmatched to this day. Piloted by luminaries including Juha Kankkunen and Miki Biasion, the Delta’s dominance was underpinned by relentless technical development and an extraordinary ability to adapt to every surface and condition. Whether on the icy passes of Monte Carlo or the punishing gravel of the Acropolis Rally, it proved not merely competitive, but definitive, setting the benchmark by which all contemporaries were judged.

Complementing the factory programme, the esteemed Team Grifone emerged as one of the most accomplished independent entrants of the era. Operating at a level that frequently rivalled works efforts, the Italian squad campaigned Delta Integrales to considerable success across European and national championships. Their cars secured numerous outright victories and podium finishes, often prevailing against factory-backed opposition and further extending the competitive lifespan of the model. In doing so, Team Grifone not only underscored the Delta’s inherent capability but also cemented its status as a truly versatile and enduring icon of rallying excellence.

This striking Lancia Delta Group A recreation has been expertly built by respected specialists Auto Integrale of Reading, U.K., and is finished in the iconic H.F. Team Grifone black and gold livery. Based on a 1996 Evo II donor car, it has been comprehensively re-engineered to closely reflect full Group A specification, with the exception of the transmission, which has been retained in a configuration better suited to fast road driving. The result is a car that combines authentic rally-derived engineering with genuine usability.

The mechanical specification is extensive and focused. Power comes from a forged engine producing approximately 350 bhp, paired with a rebuilt gearbox featuring a short final drive, strengthening plate, and short-shift mechanism. The chassis benefits from rose-jointed suspension, Group A-style front arms, adjustable coilover suspension, uprated anti-roll bars, and enhanced braking with a hydraulic handbrake. Additional competition-inspired components include an FIA ATL fuel system, tubular rear differential carrier, quick-ratio steering rack, Kevlar underbody protection, and a full suite of Group A-style cooling and intake systems, alongside a 75 mm exhaust.

Inside, the car features a purpose-built environment with a custom roll cage, FIA-approved fire system, Peltor intercom, Brantz trip meter, and Abarth-style dashboard. Attention to detail extends throughout, with elements such as wind-up windows, anti-shatter glass, heated windscreen, Speedline-style 17-inch wheels, and correct Group A fittings including lamp pod, brake cooling ducts, and bonnet pins. Built for Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay and finished in 2023, the car is supported by a comprehensive selection of invoices and photographs documenting its build and has covered fewer than 750 kilometres since completion.

Fully road legal and U.K. registered, this is a highly capable and well-sorted example that delivers strong performance and an engaging driving experience, accompanied by an intoxicating turbocharged soundtrack. Whether enjoyed on the road or presented at enthusiast events, it offers a compelling opportunity to experience a faithfully executed Group A-inspired Delta.
