Description

Few cars are as synonymous with American motoring as the Ford Mustang, a model that has become one of the most recognisable and celebrated sports cars of all time. Introduced in 1964, the Mustang was an immediate success, combining distinctive styling, strong performance and everyday usability. By 1968, the first-generation Mustang had evolved into a more muscular and refined machine, with the Fastback body style arguably representing the most desirable interpretation of the original design. Its long bonnet, sweeping roofline and purposeful stance perfectly captured the spirit of American performance motoring during the 1960s.

Available with a range of engines, including several powerful V8 options, the 1968 Mustang offered an engaging driving experience accompanied by the unmistakable soundtrack that has come to define American muscle cars. Its legendary status was further cemented by its appearance in the 1968 film Bullitt, with Steve McQueen famously driving a Highland Green Mustang GT Fastback through the streets of San Francisco. More than half a century later, the 1968 Mustang Fastback remains a highly sought-after classic, combining timeless styling, characterful performance and an enduring place in automotive history.

The example offered here is a 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback, originally supplied new through Canal Motors Inc. of New Orleans, Louisiana. As confirmed by its accompanying Deluxe Marti Report, the car was built at Ford's Dearborn plant on 8th December 1967, before being sold to its first owner on 2nd February 1968.

Originally finished in Highland Green, this Mustang left the factory equipped with Ford's 302 cubic-inch V8 engine and C-4 Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. Additional factory options included power steering, air conditioning, an AM radio, centre console, deluxe steering wheel, tinted glass and chrome-styled steel wheels.

The car has since undergone a number of significant mechanical upgrades, most notably the installation of a 347 cubic-inch (5.7-litre) stroker V8 engine, paired with a Tremec T5 five-speed manual gearbox. Further improvements include approximately £15,000 invested in the suspension, a rack-and-pinion steering conversion and upgraded Wilwood brakes at all four corners. The car is fitted with 17-inch wheels, running 225/45 R17 and 245/45 R17 tyres. The seat pans have also been modified and lowered to provide additional headroom and a more comfortable driving position, particularly for taller drivers.

More recently, in August 2026, the car received attention at JZM Porsche, where the carburettor was completely stripped, cleaned and rebuilt. This included replacement gaskets, seals, power valve and accelerator pump diaphragms, together with cleaning and adjustment of the internal components.

With its iconic Fastback styling, desirable Highland Green factory colour and extensive mechanical upgrades, this Mustang offers a combination of classic American V8 character and improved driving dynamics. Accompanied by its Deluxe Marti Report and recent maintenance documentation, it represents an appealing example of one of America's most recognisable classics.
