Description
By 1990, Ferrari found the Testarossa firmly in the crosshairs of Lamborghini’s Diablo. As a result, Maranello issued a call to arms and developed the formidable 512 TR. The car was very clearly based on the Testarossa, both mechanically and aesthetically, and paid homage to it in its name: 5 referring to displacement, 12 to the number of cylinders, and TR for Testarossa.
The car was exceptionally well received by customers and the press alike. Thanks to the seven-year production run of the Testarossa, Ferrari had solid feedback on which to build and improve an already well-rounded car. First and foremost, the interior was updated with a new steering wheel and revised seats, making the car more focused towards grand touring. Externally, the 512 TR remained almost identical to the Testarossa, albeit with a redesigned, more aerodynamic and aggressive front end.
The engine received the most substantial overhaul. Bosch engine management, Nikasil cylinder liners, 10:1 compression, and a redesigned exhaust system increased power from 390 hp in the Testarossa to 428 hp in the 512 TR, resulting in a top speed of 195 mph. Ferrari also adopted a single-plate clutch, quickened the steering rack, and fitted larger brakes to complement the car’s increased performance.
Delivered new in May 1992 to its first owner through Walter Bordese of Turin, Italy, this left-hand-drive example is presented in the iconic combination of Rosso Corsa over Nero, complemented by optional Rosso carpets.
The car has recently undergone a comprehensive recommissioning at the official Ferrari service centre GTO Motors in Gerenzano, Italy, with expenditure totalling just under €40,000. It remains Italian-registered with all taxes paid and is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
Representing the most advanced and final evolution of Ferrari’s legendary 1980s supercar, this highly original and well-maintained example would make a fine addition to any collection. Contact us now for more information or to arrange a viewing.
