Description
Introduced at the 1971 Turin Motor Show as the successor to the front-engined Daytona, the Ferrari 365 GT4 BB marked a decisive turning point for Maranello, becoming the marque’s first series-production mid-engined 12-cylinder road car. Styled by Pininfarina under Leonardo Fioravanti, the Berlinetta Boxer combined dramatic wedge-profile coachwork with advanced packaging, relocating the V12 behind the cockpit in pursuit of improved balance and outright performance. Entering production in 1973, the model remained in build until 1976, with a total of just 387 examples completed, securing its position as the rarest and most coveted of the Boxer lineage. Of these, approximately just 58 were produced in right-hand drive for the UK market.
At its core lay a 4,390 cc Tipo F102 A 180-degree V12, often described as a “flat-12”, fed by four triple-choke Weber carburettors and producing circa 344 bhp at 7,000 rpm, transmitted through a five-speed rear transaxle. This sophisticated drivetrain, mounted longitudinally, endowed the 365 GT4 BB with formidable performance for its era, alongside a notably low centre of gravity. Chassis construction remained conventionally tubular, clothed in steel bodywork, while independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes ensured suitably modern road manners. Though superseded by the 512 BB in 1976, the 365 GT4 BB is today regarded as the purest expression of the Boxer concept, combining early carburetted character, limited production, and landmark engineering significance within Ferrari’s evolving mid-engined V12 lineage.
A rare opportunity to acquire one of the few 365 GT4 BBs supplied new to the UK. This example was ordered on 2 April 1974 and delivered via Maranello Concessionaires, finished originally in Rosso Chiaro with a Pelle Blu interior.
The history file is comprehensive, retaining original Ferrari factory shipment notes, together with detailed reports from noted Ferrari historians Marcel Massini and Tony Willis. Early in its life, the car remained in the UK with a series of private custodians. During the ownership of Richard Dyke Price, the car became well known on the concours circuit, featuring in a number of publications and securing awards including at Prescott in 1985. Throughout this period, it was maintained regardless of cost.
Subsequently exported to Southeast Asia, the car entered the collection of Jon Wijaya, who commissioned its refinishing into the striking Rosso Corsa with Nero sill accents and a Crema interior that it presents in today. In 2015, the car was awarded “Red Book” Classiche Certification from the Ferrari factory. In recent years, the car has continued to benefit from significant investment, with over £40,000 spent since 2016 on maintenance and servicing by a recognised marque specialist, including a service completed in February 2026.
Now presenting in excellent condition with fewer than 40,000 miles showing, this is a highly usable, well-documented example of Ferrari’s iconic Berlinetta Boxer. Equally at home on the road or the concours field, it is a car that delivers on every level, rarity, provenance and presence. Contact us now for more information or to arrange a viewing.
