Description

The Ferrari 250 GT/L or 'Lusso' is the last evolution of the famed Ferrari 250 Berlinetta line of vehicles; one of the most beautiful cars ever made. The car was initially revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October 1962, the last vehicle to carry the iconic "250" name, carrying design and performance features from legendary cars such as the GTO and SWB.

The Lusso was instantly desired by celebrity petrol heads such as Steve McQueen and Eric Clapton. Demand outstripped supply massively, with only 350 Lussos being produced from 1962-1964; the 250 GT/L was always destined to be a future classic. Translating to English as 'Luxury,' the Lusso's cabin beautifully compliments that curvaceous exterior with extensive leather, chrome and the now famous Nardi wood-rimmed wheel dominating the environment.

The 250 GT/L is powered by a 3.0 litre Columbo V12, benefiting from triple Weber carbs producing around 240 bhp. Although performance was not the key objective of the Lusso, it still lived up to the high standards of other 250-series Ferraris, capable of speeds around 150mph. Such DNA meant that the Lusso was not only one of the best-looking Ferraris ever made, but also one of the best to drive; the ultimate Grand Tourer, focused on luxury over competition.

The stunning LHD example we are pleased to offer for sale was completed by the factory on the 3rd August 1963 as the 75th 250 Lusso built. It was specified from new in the rare factory combination of Grigio Notte over Rosso leather. The car was delivered new to Rimini, Italy and sold to its first owner, Umberto Carli, via the dealer SIVAM of Bologna. The car remained in Italy until 1969 when it was sold and exported to California, after which it was noted by the Ferrari Owners Club USA to belong to a resident of North Hollywood, who kept the car for the next 44 years.

In 2014, the Ferrari’s long-term keeper relinquished ownership of the car and it returned to Europe via the United Kingdom. Upon its return, the car was sent to JD Classics of Maldon, Essex where it was treated to a full, no-expense-spared restoration between 2014 and 2017. Cosmetic works included a bare metal respray in its factory-correct shade of Grigio Notte, a full interior retrim in Rosso leather as well as new carpets and re-chroming all exterior brightwork.

Mechanically, the V12 engine was rebuilt with a new timing chain, pistons, rings, main bearings, and exhaust valves, while the crankshaft was reground. The gearbox and differential were overhauled with new bearings, gaskets, and seals. The front and rear suspension and braking systems were inspected, cleaned, and refinished to period standards. The works have been fully documented, with a CD accompanying the car containing in excess of 500 photos.

Since restoration the car has been used sparingly and presents exquisitely. It retains its matching numbers engine and gearbox and Classiche Certification has been freshly awarded by the Ferrari Factory. The 250 GT Lusso is undoubtedly one of the finest machines for cross continental road trips or weekend drives and this fully restored example would leave its new owner wanting for nothing.
