The second-generation Dodge Charger was introduced for the 1968 model year, featuring completely redesigned bodywork with its distinctive ‘Coke bottle’ profile, concealed headlights and sweeping fastback roofline. Built on Chrysler’s B-body platform, the Charger was offered with a range of engines, with the performance-focused R/T, standing for Road/Track and sitting at the top of the range.

The Charger R/T was fitted as standard with Chrysler’s 440 cubic-inch Magnum V8, while the 426 Hemi was available as an option. Transmission choices included an automatic or four-speed manual gearbox, with R/T models also receiving uprated suspension and brakes, heavy-duty components, R/T badging and the distinctive ‘Bumblebee’ stripe around the rear bodywork. The second-generation Charger has since become one of the most recognisable American performance cars of the period.

This particular example was delivered in January 1968 and is a genuine factory manual R/T. Originally finished in Yellow over a Black vinyl interior, the car spent its early life in California, Washington and New York before being imported into the United Kingdom in 2018.

During its time in the United States, the Charger underwent an extensive rotisserie restoration carried out by the owner of a specialist body shop. The shell was stripped back to bare metal before being restored and refinished in its original factory Yellow. The work also included a replacement roof, new chrome bumpers, badges and brightwork.

Purchased by its current owner in 2022, the car has since been fitted with satin black paint protection film by Topaz Detailing, preserving the restored Yellow paintwork beneath. The Black vinyl interior was restored at the same time as the bodywork and features a refurbished dashboard, new headlining and Tick-Tock tachometer. Further equipment includes a RetroSound Bluetooth audio system, Auto Gauge instrumentation and a Holley Sniper EFI digital display.

Under the bonnet is a 440 cubic-inch V8 featuring Edelbrock aluminium performance cylinder heads, an aluminium intake manifold, Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection, Crane 286 hydraulic camshaft, Hedman headers, MSD electronic ignition and a Flowmaster performance exhaust. An aluminium radiator with electric cooling fan and replacement fuel system have also been fitted. The dual Edelbrock 600 CFM carburettors and intake manifold previously fitted to the car are included.

Power is transmitted through a Tremec five-speed manual gearbox to an 8.75-inch Sure Grip rear axle with a 3.73:1 differential ratio. Further upgrades include a Bergman fast-ratio steering box, front disc brakes with upgraded brake lines and 11-inch rear drum brakes.

The Charger is accompanied by an extensive history file containing its original Washington State Title, UK registration documents, restoration photographs, maintenance invoices, parts receipts, import documentation and period Dodge Charger literature.

A well-restored and thoughtfully upgraded example of the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T, combining its 440 cubic-inch V8 and manual gearbox with a number of sympathetic improvements for modern road use. Presented today in satin black with its restored factory Yellow paintwork preserved beneath, this genuine R/T is accompanied by an excellent history file.
