Description

Introduced in 1962 as the successor to the much-loved Giulietta Spider, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider represented a natural evolution of one of Italy’s most celebrated open-top sports cars. Designed by Pininfarina, it retained the elegant proportions, flowing lines and beautifully understated detailing of its predecessor, while benefiting from a number of mechanical improvements. Designated Tipo 101.19, the standard Giulia Spider was powered by Alfa Romeo’s larger 1,570cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine, producing approximately 92 bhp and paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. These improvements brought greater performance and refinement, while preserving the engaging driving characteristics for which Alfa Romeo had become renowned.

Produced during a golden era of Italian automotive design, the Giulia Spider perfectly captured the spirit of 1960s open-top motoring. Its lightweight construction, responsive handling and wonderfully characterful engine made it equally at home on winding country roads or longer continental journeys. Today, the Giulia Spider remains a highly desirable example of Alfa Romeo’s sporting heritage, admired for its timeless Pininfarina coachwork, mechanical simplicity and unmistakable Italian charm. An elegant and rewarding classic that continues to offer an authentic open-top driving experience more than six decades after its introduction.

This particular example was manufactured on 10th December 1963 and subsequently sold new on 12th February 1965 through Alfa Romeo's Aden dealership in Yemen. A rare original right-hand drive example, believed to be one of just 404 produced in this configuration, it left the factory finished in Grigio (Grey) with a Rosso (Red) interior, a colour combination it retains today.

The car was subsequently imported to the United Kingdom and first registered here on 4th June 1966. Its history is supported by an extensive collection of documentation, including historic MOT records dating back to 1979, restoration invoices and photographs, together with an Alfa Romeo Certificato di Origine, issued in June 2023, confirming its original factory specification and production details.

Between 2015 and 2019, the Giulia was subjected to an extensive restoration carried out to a particularly high standard. The works included a comprehensive bare-metal repaint in its original Grigio finish, alongside significant attention to the bodywork and underside. Specialist metalwork was undertaken by Tubeworks of Cheltenham, with the chassis and underside professionally repaired, treated and protected against corrosion. The engine was also rebuilt by marque specialist Bob Dove, with the car having covered only limited mileage since.

The restoration extended to virtually every aspect of the car, including the suspension, braking system, fuel system, cooling system and electrical components. Numerous mechanical parts were either replaced or refurbished, while the interior was comprehensively retrimmed in its original red colour scheme. The seats were rebuilt with new foams and vinyl covers, new carpets were fitted throughout, and the dashboard, instruments and interior fittings were carefully restored. Extensive attention was also paid to the exterior brightwork, with numerous chrome components refinished or replaced, alongside new seals, lighting components and period-correct details.

Purchased by its current owner in June 2019, the Giulia Spider has formed part of a private collection and has been used sparingly since. It remains in fantastic condition throughout, with the quality of its extensive restoration still very much evident today. The car is accompanied by a substantial history file containing restoration documentation, photographs, historic MOT records and its Alfa Romeo Certificate of Origin.
